When guitarist Allyson Baker moved to San Francisco from Toronto in 2000, she was already a veteran of punk bands and hardcore acts alike. After doing time in a sludge rock outfit, she formed the first incarnation of Dirty Ghosts with bassist Carson Binks, taking a stripped-down approach to leaner, meaner rock songs. Dirty Ghosts was highlighted by Baker’s new-found role on the mic as well as the guitar; one she reluctantly took, yet quickly commanded. Last year, Binks left the duo and Baker was forced to re-think her outfit and re-invent Dirty Ghosts as the full-on rock group it always wanted to be. One listen to the band’s latest, Metal Moon, proves that Baker’s perseverance paid off, and now Dirty Ghosts are stronger, louder, and better than ever. CHARLIE SWANSON
