What do you get when you take a kid from South Carolina who listens to every musical genre, and then teach him to play every instrument? You get Toro Y Moi, the brainchild of singer-songwriter Chaz Bundick. His music has been described sometimes as “spacy lo-fi lusciousness,” or sometimes as “hazy French house meets ‘60s pop.” Confused? It’s okay. Even the name Toro Y Moi is a mash-up of French and Spanish words, and the music is just as hard to categorize. This year saw the release of Bundick’s sophomore album, Underneath the Pine, which adds a new funk influence into the complicated mix and sees Bundick moving from dreamy chillwave toward a more prog rock sound.
